Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) [BYOD]

Updated: · CyberSecureFox Editorial Team

Bring your own device (BYOD) is a policy that allows employees to use their personal smartphones, tablets and laptops to access corporate email, applications and data.

How BYOD works

Instead of issuing company-owned hardware, the organisation lets staff connect their own devices, usually under conditions defined in a BYOD policy. Technical controls separate work and personal use:

  • Work profiles and containers – Android Enterprise work profiles and Apple’s User Enrollment keep corporate apps and data in a separate, managed space.
  • Mobile application management – policies applied to specific apps, such as preventing copying from Outlook to personal apps, without controlling the entire device.
  • Mobile device management for fuller control where required.
  • Virtual desktops and browser-based access that keep data off the device altogether.

Why BYOD matters for security

BYOD reduces costs and is convenient, but it expands the attack surface. Personal devices may run outdated software, be jailbroken, contain malicious apps, be shared with family members or connect to insecure Wi-Fi. When a phone is lost or an employee leaves, corporate data can remain on it. Malware on a personal laptop can steal session cookies and passwords for corporate cloud services – infostealer infections on unmanaged devices have been the starting point of numerous breaches.

There is also a privacy side: employers must not monitor personal data more than necessary, and in the EU processing is subject to the GDPR. A full remote wipe of an employee’s personal phone can delete family photos and lead to disputes.

Best practices for BYOD

  • Publish a clear policy covering allowed devices, monitoring and offboarding.
  • Require minimum OS versions, screen locks and encryption.
  • Use selective wipe of corporate data and data loss prevention controls.
  • Grant access based on device health in line with zero trust.
