A pig butchering scam is a long-term fraud in which criminals build a friendly or romantic relationship with a victim and then persuade them to invest ever larger sums in a fake cryptocurrency platform.
How pig butchering scams work
The name is a translation of the Chinese “sha zhu pan” – the victim is “fattened” before the “slaughter”. The scheme relies on patient social engineering:
- First contact – a “wrong number” text, a dating app match or a message on social media or LinkedIn, often with photos of an attractive, successful person.
- Building trust – weeks or months of daily conversations, without asking for money.
- The investment – the scammer mentions their success in cryptocurrency trading and guides the victim to a professional-looking website or app.
- Fattening – the platform shows large fake profits, and small withdrawals may even work, so the victim invests more, borrows money or takes out loans.
- Slaughter – when the victim wants to withdraw, they must pay “taxes” or “fees”; eventually the account and the contact disappear.
Why pig butchering matters
Victims often lose their life savings, and the funds sent from their crypto wallets are quickly laundered through many addresses and money mules. Cryptocurrency investment fraud is among the costliest categories in FBI IC3 reports, and the US FinCEN issued a dedicated alert on pig butchering in 2023. Many scams are run from compounds in Southeast Asia – notably in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos – where trafficked workers are forced to message victims.
How to protect yourself
- Be wary of strangers who move the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram and start talking about investments.
- Never invest through a platform recommended by someone you know only online; check the regulator’s register.
- Treat demands for fees to release your money as a clear sign of fraud.
- Report the scam to the police and to your bank or exchange as quickly as possible.
