OpenAI Blocks North Korean Threat Actors Using ChatGPT for Malicious Activities

OpenAI has recently uncovered and blocked multiple accounts linked to prominent North Korean state-sponsored hacking groups that were leveraging ChatGPT for cyber attack preparation. The February threat intelligence report reveals how these threat actors utilized artificial intelligence capabilities to conduct target research and develop sophisticated system penetration methodologies.

Advanced Persistent Threat Groups Identified

Through collaboration with a cybersecurity industry partner, OpenAI identified and terminated accounts associated with two major threat actors: VELVET CHOLLIMA (also known as Kimsuky and Emerald Sleet) and STARDUST CHOLLIMA (APT38, Sapphire Sleet). These groups are notorious for their sophisticated cyber operations targeting financial institutions and critical infrastructure.

Malicious Applications of AI Technology

The investigation revealed that the threat actors employed ChatGPT for multiple malicious purposes, with a particular focus on cryptocurrency technology research and malware development. Their activities included:

  • Development and debugging of Remote Access Trojans (RATs)
  • Creation of RDP brute-force attack tools
  • Manipulation of existing security tools for malicious purposes

Command and Control Infrastructure Exposure

During their malware development activities, the threat actors inadvertently exposed their command and control (C2) infrastructure URLs containing malicious payloads. This critical intelligence was subsequently shared with threat scanning services, enhancing the security posture of potential targets.

Fraudulent Employment Operations

The investigation also revealed an elaborate scheme where ChatGPT was utilized to create convincing cover stories for North Korean IT workers. These operatives sought employment in Western companies to generate revenue for the DPRK, using AI-generated content to enhance their credibility.

Chinese Influence Operations Detected

The report additionally highlighted two operations attributed to Chinese-affiliated groups: Peer Review, which utilized ChatGPT for social media monitoring tool development, and Sponsored Discontent, focused on generating multi-language disinformation content.

This incident highlights the emerging trend of AI tool exploitation by sophisticated threat actors and emphasizes the critical importance of implementing robust security controls for AI systems.
