Google is integrating Content Credentials based on the C2PA standard into the Pixel 10 camera app and Google Photos. The move aims to make image provenance verifiable by default, helping users distinguish authentic photos from AI-generated or AI-edited content and strengthening platform defenses against deepfakes and visual disinformation.

What C2PA Content Credentials are and how provenance works

Content Credentials are machine-readable metadata that record a media file’s origin and edit history. The C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) specification defines how to package details such as capture device, time, and the software and operations applied during editing. These records are bound to the file using a cryptographic signature, creating a tamper-evident provenance trail that can be verified without sending the image to a third party.

Cryptographic integrity and tamper evidence

Under C2PA, the provenance manifest is signed using public-key cryptography—the same class of mechanisms that protect online banking and code signing.
